According to the recently published State of Mouth Cancer Report1, nearly 8,300 people are being diagnosed with mouth cancer every year, a rise of 49% compared with a decade ago. What’s more alarming is that 45% of British adults don’t understand anything about mouth cancer, with three quarters admitting they don’t know what the symptoms are.
If you think you might be among them, now is the perfect opportunity to spend a few minutes reading to the end of this blog, so that you can be more aware of the signs and symptoms.
Early detection saves lives, it’s as simple as that.
How can JDRM help?
Here at JDRM we take your oral health really seriously, which is why our dental check-ups also include screening for mouth cancer. By simply attending your check-ups on a regular basis, whether this is every six months or as advised by your dentist, you are doing your bit to halt mouth cancer in its tracks. But why stop there? We’d encourage you to be more vigilant, and as part of your day to day teeth cleaning regime, take a little time to understand the state of your mouth. If you spot something you are not sure about, or you have pain or discomfort that won’t go away, speak to us about it.
Signs and symptoms of mouth cancer
Here’s what you need to look out for:
Mouth cancer risk factors
Some people will also be at a higher risk of developing mouth cancer, so if your lifestyle choices fall into one or more of these categories, then you’ll need to be extra vigilant:
Men are known to be at a higher risk than women and if you have previously had mouth cancer, or have a family history of it, then you may also be at a greater risk of developing the disease.
How you can help reduce your risk
By making better lifestyle choices, being more aware of any changes in your mouth, and visiting your dentist regularly, you can reduce your risk of getting mouth cancer and ensure early diagnosis – which we know gives a far greater chance of survival.

]]>You may not know where to start with teaching your child on dental care, which is why we came up with the following back to school oral health tips:
As soon as baby teeth begin to poke through its time to start brushing. It’s also important to book a dental appointment to double check everything is developing as it should be, as well as getting tips from your dentist on how to care for them.
To make dental care feel like less of a chore, try to think of ways to help your child enjoy it. Firstly, find a toothpaste flavour they will like, such as strawberry. Next, find a quirky toothbrush with one of their favourite TV characters or in their favourite colour to make it more appealing.
Then find a song that will make the routine fun and give them an estimate of when their two minutes of tooth brushing is over.
Find a small-medium sized toothbrush with soft bristles for easy and effective teeth cleaning. But don’t forget to replace family toothbrushes regularly, after illness and after the bristles have become worn and are no longer effective.
As well as having a good toothbrushing regime in place, consider how your child’s diet can affect their teeth. Too many sugary snacks can lead to tooth decay, which consequently wears down the tooth’s enamel and causes plaque.
Despite fruit being good for your health, too much citric fruit can erode your teeth enamel due to the acidity in these foods. Crunchy foods are also prone to getting stuck inbetween your teeth, which your child will have to wait to get home to floss out.
However, dairy products are great for helping your child’s teeth become stronger and healthier. Sugar free gum may also appropriate for older children, as chewing is known to boost saliva production to help clear away mouth bacteria.
Drinks containing too much sugar can be damaging to your teeth, so the best way to avoid soda to tooth contact is by using straws. Or, to benefit your child’s overall health, consider swapping to less sugary drinks and water.
Keep your little ones smiling with clean, healthy teeth by following our guide.

]]>Let’s talk about ways that your mouth changes as you get older and what you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Stay hydrated
It’s normal for our mouth to be drier as we get older. This can be a problem as saliva is important for fighting against tooth decay and keeping our teeth clean. The best cause of action is to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It’s also worth noting that some medicines can dry out your mouth, so it can be advisable to talk to a doctor about this to find out if you could be taking alternative medicines.
Make regular dental appointments
When we are younger, it’s often clear that there is a problem with our teeth as we have painful symptoms. However, nerves in teeth can lose sensitivity as we age, so pain tolerance is higher. Whilst this may sound like a good thing, it means that problems may not be diagnosed until much later and may be more serious and difficult to treat. The simple solution is to ensure that you visit your dentist for a check-up on a regular basis.
Keeping stains at bay
Over time, it’s normal for our teeth to grow darker as a result of the loss of enamel, however, we can take steps to keep teeth staining at bay. Eating certain foods, drinking alcohol, tea and coffee and smoking can increase the build-up of staining, so it’s advisable to change your lifestyle in order to prevent excessive teeth staining. However, a regular and effective cleaning regime is the best way to help prevent the darkening of teeth as we age.
Using a dentist-recommended toothbrush and fluoride tooth paste and brushing your teeth at least twice a day is essential for reducing staining and keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Our teeth and gums are meant to last a lifetime, so good oral healthcare is vital.
Preventing tooth decay and gum disease
Tooth decay and gum disease can slowly get worse over time, but good oral hygiene helps to stop these problems in their tracks. As stated above, brush your teeth at least twice a day, taking care to clean each tooth and around the gums. It’s also recommended that you floss every day and visit your dentist regularly.
Preventing excessive wear
Teeth are strong and the hardest part of the body, but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t subjected to wear and tear over the years. As we chew and bite throughout our life, it’s inevitable that our teeth will eventually show the signs as the grinding surfaces of our molars flatten and hard enamel thins.
Some loss of enamel is inevitable, as is the wear of our molars, however, we can prevent more severe wear and tear. For example, avoiding crunching on hard foods helps to prevent chipped and broken teeth. Teeth grinding can also have a considerable effect on tooth wear, so if you feel that you grind your teeth in your sleep, it’s important to seek help from a dentist.

]]>With more people finding themselves visiting the dentist on a regular basis and cosmetic treatments, including teeth whitening, becoming increasingly popular, the concern for good oral health rises.
However, despite the increase in spending and dentist visits, a Yougov survey in support of SimplyHealth Professionals, found that only 69% of UK adults brush their teeth twice daily while 2% confess that they don’t even brush their teeth at all.
With concern about the amount of people skipping brushing their teeth, one possible explanation suggested was that people are skipping steps out of their hygiene routines and delaying dental appointments as they can’t find time in their busy schedules.
However, a good oral hygiene routine is an essential part of everyday life that only takes a matter of minutes to complete each morning and evening and avoiding it can lead to serious consequences for your teeth and gums.
Therefore, we have created a list of ways to organise your busy, working lives around a good oral health routine:
If you can’t find time in your morning and evening routines to brush your teeth, then you should make time. To free time in the morning, meal prep and lay out your outfit the night before, along with other tasks that take up too much time. Then spend your new free time completing a thorough oral hygiene routine.
Snacks with hard shells or filled with sugar can be a hazard to your oral heath, as they encourage teeth decay. Find alternatives that will be gentler on your teeth and gums, including foods that are rich in calcium, phosphorous, vitamin D and vitamin C. This may include cheeses and other dairy products, nuts, raw vegetables and sugar-free gum.
With water being non-acidic, sugar free and zero calorie, drinking plenty of water throughout the day can be very beneficial for your oral health. A tip for encouraging yourself to drink more is to have a bottle of water filled up on your desk. This acts as a constant reminder and requires minimal effort. Water bottles are also great to grab and go, so you always have a bottle on you.
Keeping refreshed by water all day will also help to combat morning breath, keep you feeling fresh and hydrated and won’t put you at risk of tooth decay, gum disease or enamel erosion like a lot of sugary drinks will.
Smoking is a bad habit that is consequential for all of your body, including your mouth. Smoking cigarettes can stain your teeth and be a potential threat for gum disease and mouth cancer. Also, less frequent smoking breaks means more time can be spent being productive with your work.
No matter how busy your schedule may be, it is always crucial to make time to visit your dentist for a routine check-up. This can identify any potential problems with your teeth and treat it there and then, rather than prolonging the wait while the issues get worse, leading to worse consequences and more time being taken up in your schedule.

]]>Organised by the Oral Health Foundation, this year’s campaign takes place from the 14th of May until the 14th of June. Although maintaining good oral health is a relatively simple task for most people, it’s surprising how many of us do fail to properly care for our teeth, gums and mouth. Many of us are overly reliant on sugar foods and drinks and quite a large percentage of people don’t visit their dentist as often as they should.
Over time, failing to care for our teeth properly and not going for regular dental check-ups can lead to gum disease and tooth decay, plus the need for invasive and expensive dental treatment that may have been avoidable. Whilst the loss of teeth as a result of poor oral health is serious enough, the repercussions of your oral health can go much further. Studies have shown that bad oral health is linked to a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, lung disease, as well as complications with pregnancy.
As well as helping to promote better overall health, a healthy mouth is also wonderful for helping you feel more confident in yourself and maintaining a positive mindset. In turn, greater self-confidence can help you in your career and relationships.
Care for your mouth!
On top of the three main messages that National Smile Month aims to spread, these important tips will also help you to keep your mouth healthy:

]]>How Does It Work?
The Smile in a Day system is unlike any other traditional implant and restoration method. Two dental implants are fixed permanently to the front of your jaw and an additional two are fitted to the back.
When being attached, they are specially positioned to avoid bone grafting. As a result you are presented with a perfectly positioned and stabilised framework, ready for a full arch of teeth to fit. This will adapt to the contours of your mouth for a natural and comfortable feel.
How Can I Benefit?
As the name suggests, Smile in a Day is a quick process as it can be completed in just one day. It also involves fewer implants, while providing bone level stabilisation and support for both your jawbone and teeth, giving a more youthful appearance.
It can make restoration a lot easier too, by reducing the need for bone grafting or a sinus lift, preventing problems with removable dentures and making chewing food a more effective and comfortable experience.
As well as the above benefits it’s good to also consider the more personal advantages. A great example is how your self-esteem will improve, allowing you to feel more confident in many aspects of life, particularly with your appearance and meeting new people.
It is also considered the stress-free option as it provides long-term results with minimal recovery time. Without forgetting the reduced costs when compared to single implants.
Where Can I Find This Treatment?
Smile a Day is suitable for patients who have previously lost their teeth or will in the future. However, if you do suffer with gum disease, diabetes or are a heavy smoker, please discuss this treatment with your dentist first as there may be some things you need to consider
Here at JDRM Dental Care we cater to both NHS and private patients with a range of treatments, including Smile in a Day. For more information visit our please click here or call a member of our friendly team on 01530 811 303.
]]>Kings College London has just discovered that despite many of us thinking they are harmless, fruit flavoured drinks and teas can actually cause more corrosion than first thought, increasing the chances of moderate to severe tooth erosion by 11 times[1]. Surprisingly, that even includes a slice of lemon in hot water and sugar free soft drinks – which many people deem to be ‘healthy.’ The study also looked at things like salt and vinegar crisps, which thanks to their acidic nature, can erode tooth enamel dramatically.
While many of us might avoid drinking red wine due to the way that it stains the teeth, new research by the Institute of Food Science Research in Madrid[2], found that the polyphenols in red wine help prevent bacteria sticking to gum tissue.
Although the study’s positive results, the evidence for whether drinking red wine is good for your health is very mixed and we don’t think that people should use this as a justification to drink more wine or think that it is healthy.
At JDRM Dental Care, we always welcome new research that affects our industry. However, as with all things we think the best way to approach your oral health is to take the line that most things are okay to consume in moderation. We also believe that you have the power to control the state of your oral health by following a few simple steps:
Enamel shields the inner layers of the teeth from disease and other environmental factors. Acid softens and dissolves enamel, so limiting the amount of time the two are in contact is key. Saliva is enamel’s main protection against acid, so limiting acidic drinks to mealtimes can help offer a level of protection.
Many of us don’t think about the acid content of what we’re eating or drinking, but making a conscious effort to be more aware can help you reduce dietary acid and protect your teeth.
The importance of brushing your teeth at least twice a day for no less than two minutes each time cannot be underestimated. It is one of the best ways to remove acid, bacteria and plaque from your teeth and will help protect the enamel. If you’re unsure whether you’re brushing your teeth for long enough, why not download a tooth brushing timer for your phone?
Keeping on top of your oral health by having a dental check-up approximately every six months ensures your dentist can accurately assess your teeth and tend to any problems before they escalate into an emergency.

]]>Well, whilst we’d happily admit that our patients are enjoying fantastic quality dental care and gentle reminders to attend on a regular basis for check-ups, the same cannot always be said across the board.
Just this month, a survey from the British Dental Association (BDA) revealed that some patients were having to travel 70 miles to see an NHS dentist – reasonable grounds, we believe, for not being able to keep an appointment. With this lack of available NHS professionals, those who cannot afford private health care, may be forced to compromise on their oral health.
Then there are the elderly people who are struggling to visit the dentist, perhaps because of their general state of health or the fact they cannot physically get there, or because they are afraid of the dentist and probably have been their entire life. Whatever the reason, there is certainly more that we can be doing as dentists to reassure patients and encourage them to stick to appointments where possible.
Parents of young children may also be at fault, for not taking their children to the dentist on a regular basis. According to figures from National Smile Month, around 40% of children don’t visit the dentist regularly. Not only does this mean that they could run into expensive and complicated dental problems such as decay and gum disease in the future, but they are also not getting into the vital habit of visiting the dentist regularly and learning about good oral health.
One of the biggest ways in which we can encourage our patients to visit us regularly is to provide a relaxing, welcoming and comfortable environment in which we are open and honest about treatments and prices and happy to answer any questions.
From our welcoming exterior, through to our relaxing waiting room and state of the art clinic, our compassionate team are here to help make your visit a pleasant one.
Take a look at what some of our patients have to say about their experience here at our dental practice:
“I found staff extremely friendly and caring which made going to the dentist a very enjoyable experience!”
“I have always been accommodated and nothing has ever been too much trouble!”
For patients who are nervous about visiting the dentist, we offer a relaxing, friendly environment and will always be understanding about your concerns, using calming techniques to ease your fears and ensure that you can still benefit from great oral health care and vital treatments.
We are currently accepting new patients and would be delighted if you could join us. Even if you haven’t visited the dentist in a while, there is no time like the present to get your oral health back in great shape.

]]>Giving your pearly whites some attention after the indulgence of the Christmas period can be the perfect way to brighten your appearance and increase your confidence, and here at JDRM Dental Care, we can help you do just that.
We use Poladay tooth whitening systems, which are safe, effective and reasonably priced. Unlike other home tooth whitening kits, Poladay systems contain fluoride which helps to remineralise the surface of your teeth and helps protect against tooth sensitivity. They also have a neutral PH and high viscosity which protects your gums during treatment.
If you’re after quick results, you’ll be pleased to know that Poladay tooth whitening systems can work within as little as 15 minutes, or can be worn overnight. With different strengths to choose from, you’re in control of all aspects of the tooth whitening process, and can choose the product most suitable to you.
Getting an approved tooth whitening kit from your dentist is the best way to ensure your tooth whitening is safe and that your teeth remain free from damage. We custom make whitening trays for our patients which means the whitening product is evenly distributed around the teeth and that there is less risk of damage to the gum and surrounding oral tissues.
If you’re ready to transform your smile and make them a new shade of brilliance, please contact our expert team. Alternatively, you can find out more information here.

]]>The post Christmas Oral Health Tips appeared first on Coalville Dentist - JDRM Dental Care and Facial Beauty Treatments.
]]>Here we share some advice so that you can keep your teeth in great shape over Christmas:
Beware the sugar stretch
One of the biggest problems to teeth over the Christmas period is the fact that they are constantly under attack as we tend to eat and drink all of the wrong kinds of things, in succession and often for a period of several days. Fizzy drinks, dried fruits, chocolates and mince pies are just a few festive favourites that put your teeth in the danger zone, so it won’t hurt to say no occasionally. Remember it is not the quantity you consume that does your teeth most harm, but the frequency with which you consume these sweet treats, so stick to once or twice a day to give your teeth a break.
Don’t ditch the daily dental routine
The only thing that runs to schedule over the festive period is Father Christmas, but that doesn’t mean that you can become sloppy with your brushing and flossing. Just because you can enjoy lie ins, late evenings and meals around the clock, doesn’t mean that your teeth have to suffer. As long as you remember to brush your teeth twice and day and floss regularly, you will help protect your teeth and gums from the damaging effects of overindulgence.
Choose cheese
It is welcome news for cheese lovers that this Christmas favourite is actually good for your teeth. Cheese helps to restore the natural acid balance in your mouth and can reduce your chances of developing tooth decay. So, when the cheeseboard arrives at the end of the meal, say yes, as even just a small cube can help to neutralise acid and protect your teeth.
Fizz in a fix
If you love a glass or two of fizz, then the headlines earlier this year about ‘Prosecco teeth’ probably won’t have escaped you. This was the revelation that sparkling wines are causing damage to our teeth due to the sugar, acidity and carbonation. To limit the effects, we advise that you drink with your meal to dilute the acidic effect and don’t brush your teeth for an hour after drinking.
Above all, the key thing to remember is to enjoy yourself. As long as you do so in moderation and keep up your excellent daily oral health routine, we won’t be seeing you any time soon for a filling!
With all our best wishes for a happy and healthy Christmas,
The JDRM Dental Care team

]]>Keeping tabs
During a routine check-up your dentist has an opportunity to make a full inspection of your teeth and gums and identify any adjustments you should make to your oral health and hygiene. Small changes such as altering the way you brush your teeth or suggesting the use of interdental picks can really make a significant difference.
Identifying problems
If there are any underlying issues with your teeth, spotting them quickly gives your dentist plenty of time to implement preventative treatment, helping to avoid pain and even tooth loss. These issues are normally identified and treated during routine appointments, where your dentist can combat basic issues such as built up plaque.
Avoiding gum disease
The early symptoms of gum disease can be identified well before bigger issues arise, making regular check-ups important. If you find that your gums are sensitive or bleed when you brush your teeth, your dentist will propose a course of treatment that will help to avoid issues related to gum disease, such as tooth loss and periodontitis.
Spotting Mouth Cancer
The most common symptoms of mouth cancer are very sore mouth ulcers that don’t seem to react to treatment, and persistent lumps, swelling or red patches in the mouth or on the tongue that don’t heal within three weeks. Your dentist will always look for signs of mouth cancer during a standard appointment, so a check-up may just save your life.
Checking on previous work
When your dentist performs any significant treatment it’s vital that it can be reviewed at your next appointment. So whether you’ve had a filling, bridge or dental implant, it’s important to attend a check-up so your dentist can make sure that the treatment was successful and that there are no signs of further issues or infections.
To book a check-up with one of our experienced dentists please call us on 01530 811 303, and why not take a look at our special offers on teeth whitening!

]]>The post Teeth straightening alternatives if you don’t want a brace appeared first on Coalville Dentist - JDRM Dental Care and Facial Beauty Treatments.
]]>For many years the fitting of traditional wire braces was the most recognised solution for realigning teeth, but the advancement of modern dental treatments and techniques mean there are easier and far less visible options readily available to patients.
Here at JDRM Dental Care we offer an excellent alternative treatment for patients who do not wish to have a brace fitted:
Invisalign
Popular worldwide, Invisalign has been used to successfully treat more than half a million cases and has proved particularly effective in treating crooked teeth and closing unwanted gaps.
The use of the Invisalign system has grown rapidly over the past decade because it has made orthodontic treatment far more accessible to adults who may previously have been put off having orthodontic treatment due to the appearance of traditional metal braces.
Invisalign works by applying a series of clear, removable, custom-made plastic aligners that gradually straighten your teeth. These aligners are particularly popular as they are completely invisible, which means that there are no signs of treatment and the speech of the patient is not at all impaired.
Treatment with Invisalign usually takes half the time of traditional orthodontic treatment and because the aligner is removable, patients can brush and clean their teeth as normal.
At JDRM Dental Care we offer this popular method of alignment as a stand-alone treatment or as a preparatory measure before undertaking cosmetic options such as bonding.
If you would like to find out more about the teeth straightening treatments offered by the team here at JDRM Dental Care, please follow this link to find out more.

]]>The post All you need to know about Dental Implants appeared first on Coalville Dentist - JDRM Dental Care and Facial Beauty Treatments.
]]>Dental implants are small metal posts or frames that are attached to your jawbone underneath your gums. When they’re in position, they allow your dentist to attach replacement teeth to them.
Why do people need them?
Quite often, dental implants are used when people have lost their original teeth due to gum disease. They can also be used to fill unsightly gaps and preserve a youthful appearance. This is because when you have gaps in your teeth, the skin on your face can start to sink inwards, making you look older.
How do they work?
Implants fuse to your jawbone and support artificial teeth without them moving around in the same way that dentures do. They can also be much more comfortable than other tooth replacement options and no adjacent teeth need to be prepared or ground down for them to work.
Can I get implants?
In order to receive dental implants, you need to have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant in place. Implants are usually more expensive than other methods of tooth replacement, so you will want to ensure that you keep them very clean and look after them well.
To see whether you’re a candidate for dental implants, get in touch with your dentist who will be able to examine your smile and advise on a course of action.
Although implant dentistry has been around for decades, there is now an abundance of modern technology that can assist in the process. From digital imaging equipment to 3D CAD/CAM software and computer tomography, you can often see the results of your treatment before you’ve even started.
What happens during the procedure?
Your dentist will make a small incision in the gum and place the implant into the jawbone using a screw. When the implant is in place, the gums are sutured using stitches. The implant usually heals for around three to six months, before an extension is added on to the metal post that will serve as the base for the new tooth. When the process is complete, the dentist will need to check everything over and ensure it’s all working as it should.
Does the process hurt?
Although the dental implant process sounds painful, like most dentistry – it uses local anaesthetic. You shouldn’t feel any pain during the surgery, but may feel some slight discomfort around your chin, cheeks and underneath the eyes for a few days.

]]>The contracts – which include the provision of five new dental practices across Leicestershire and Rutland plus extended hours at an existing practice – represent an annual investment in local dental care in excess of £6.3 million, totalling more than £63 million over the 10-year* contract period.
Coming into effect on 1 December 2017, the contracts commissioned by NHS England Central Midlands will deliver the following NHS dental services in the area:
The new general dental service contracts have been commissioned by NHS England in response to an assessment of local dental needs in Leicestershire and Rutland. This assessment identified priority areas where improved access to NHS dental services was required, determining the locations of the general dental practices.
The exact locations of the new practices within each area will be agreed between NHS England and the service providers, with further details to be announced in the coming months.
The five new 8am to 8pm practices in Leicester, Loughborough, Melton and Oakham will replace the existing Dental Out of Hours Service and Dental Access Centre in Leicester city centre. This will ensure that people across Leicestershire and Rutland can benefit from easier access to urgent and routine NHS dental care close to where they live.
Di Pegg, Head of Primary Care for NHS England in Leicestershire and Rutland, said: “Having looked at the overall picture in Leicestershire and Rutland and gained an understanding of which areas are most in need of better access to dental care, we’re delighted to be able to deliver new NHS services where people need it the most.
“That’s great news for people right across the area, who from December will find it much easier to benefit from routine, urgent and out-of-hours NHS dental care closer to where they live.
“NHS England would like to formally thank Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust and its staff for providing the Dental Out of Hours, Dental Access Centre and Special Care Dentistry services for Leicestershire and Rutland.
“We will now be working with the current and new service providers to ensure that there is minimal disruption for patients and staff during the transfer period.”

]]>Babies will begin to develop teeth at around 6-9 months old. This period will be accompanied by a number of symptoms, including increased drooling, swollen gums, irritability and sleeplessness.
You may also find your child will be restless and keen to suck, bite and chew on anything they can get their hands on, despite this, you may find they also experience a lack of appetite.
It is recommended that the first visit to the dentist should take place around the time that your child’s first tooth comes through. The dentist will undertake an examination of your baby’s mouth and assess the dental development of your child, making sure that everything is healthy and that there are no potential issues.
Particularly helpful for new parents, the dentist will also offer a complete preventive dental program for you to follow, and provide lots of advice concerning tooth development, nutrition and how to avoid possible problems.
Because you can begin to brush your baby’s teeth as soon as they start to come through, your dentist will also offer advice on how to care for your baby’s teeth, including tips on brushing technique and how much toothpaste to use.
Finally, your dentist will provide plenty of information about pain relief for your child during the teething process, helping to ease the discomfort experienced by your little one and easing the strain on parents!
The summer holidays are here and to promote child examinations we’re offering a free toothbrushes with each child examination!

]]>Although it may seem like an unnecessary chore, brushing your teeth twice a day can help to prevent the build-up of plaque. Plaque can damage the gums and teeth in various ways, mainly by breaking down tooth enamel, causing tooth and gum infections and serious gum disease like periodontitis.
People with chronic gum problems like periodontal disease or gingivitis have a higher risk of heart disease, especially if it is not diagnosed or managed. The bacteria that are present with gum infections can enter the bloodstream, and attach to blood vessels that increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Flossing or using an interdental brush can also help to improve oral hygiene by removing small pieces of food that get stuck between the teeth.
Food and drink can cause tooth decay, especially if it is particularly sugary or acidic. A balanced diet can include lots of fruit and vegetables, starchy foods like bread and potatoes, healthier fats like those found in fish and nuts, and protein.
By only consuming a small amount of food and drink that contains sugar, you can help to prevent tooth decay and bacteria build up. Despite many drinks being labelled as ‘healthy’, such as smoothies, they do contain a great deal of sugar, so it is best to only have one small glass per day and to brush your teeth after consuming it.
It can be tempting to postpone dentist’s appointments, with many people thinking of their oral health as less important than their physical health. That couldn’t be further from the truth, and as explored, poor oral health can cause a myriad of health issues.
By visiting your dentist every six months, or as recommended by your dentist, you can ensure that you are ahead of the game when it comes to any potential problems. For example, the dentist may spot a very small cavity that is easily fixed with a tiny filling, but if left and ignored it could grow and cause significant problems.
Crooked teeth can also contribute to problems with oral health, due to an inability to clean the teeth properly. At JDRM Dental Care, we offer the normal service you’d expect from a dentist as well as tooth straightening solutions like Invisalign.
